Returning To Work

When you go back to work, you can continue to breast feed.  If you live close to work or if your employer offers on site daycare, you may be able to breast feed on your breaks.  If this isn’t possible, you have two choices:

1.  Maintain your milk supply by utilizing a high-quality automated electric breast pump to extract milk during the workday.  Save the milk that you have pumped for your babysitter.

2.  If you don’t want to or can’t pump at work, you could gradually substitute daytime feedings with formula while you are at still at home, but continue to nurse at night and in the morning.  The milk your body creates might not be adequate enough to keep your baby fulfilled, even if you only need enough for two feedings.

Advantages of pumping at work

Pumping while at work will stimulate your output of milk, so you’ll have enough accessible once it comes time to feed.  You can also gather up the milk you pump, so your child will have the health and nutritional benefits of breast milk even when you aren’t at home.  Pumping at work can also alleviate feelings of separation anxiety that may occur after you return to work.

Many mothers find that the benefits of breast pumping far outweigh the inconvenience.

To manage pumping at work, you will require the following:
1.  A Breast pump, preferably a fully automatic electric pump with a dual collection kit so you may pump both breasts at the same time.
2.  Bottles or bags for collecting and storing the milk.
3.  Access to a refrigerator or cooler in order to keep the milk cold until you get home.
4.  Breast pads to help protect your apparel if you begin to leak.

Be sure that you start pumping before returning to work so you know what to expect and how it feels.  You will be a lot more confident with pumping at work if you already know that you are able to produce an adequate supply of milk.

At work, you’ll want to find someplace that’s away from everybody else when you pump, an empty office or room will be sufficient.  This way, you’ll be away from everybody else and you will have the calm tranquility you need to pump.  In most offices, this should not be a problem.

To begin with you’ll want to pump every 2 to 3 hours if possible.  If you can’t pump that often, every 4 hours or so will have to suffice.  After you have completed pumping, store the milk in the bags or bottles that you brought, clean yourself up, then return to work.  Once you get home, you may feed the milk to your developing baby.
